After those first three months, Ma finished painting her embellished flower border and mailed the framed vows back, remembering to leave space at the bottom for the vow we hadnât figured out. Her work added beauty to our promises I had penned in calligraphy, as well as a dimension that I could only describe as a motherâs love.
Steve and I decided to display the vows in a prominent place for maximum impact. The door leading to our garage was used frequently, but we dismissed the location because we would hurry by it. We decided to hang the vows in the most frequented place in our home: We pounded two nails into the walls opposite of the master bedroom toilet. One nail was high behind the toilet and the other was halfway down the wall in front of the toilet. First, we hung the vows high on the nail behind the toilet for Steveâs benefit, then agreed to move it halfway down the opposite wall for me, and agreed to rotate it monthly. To be fair.
The funny thing is, after our vows were posted, our marriage started showing up.
I woke up on April 1, April Foolsâ Day, and slogged into the bathroom. The vows, bordered with Maâs cheery hand-painted petunias, seemed to stare at me authoritatively, like I did when my students didnât take me seriously. I mumbled each of my vows out loud and realized that during our engagement, Steve and I had spent two years practicing Vow #1 on the list: I will give my best self to you. Itâs the obvious yet essential vow that flows from dating. We already demonstrated that we knew how to dress up our physical, emotional, spiritual, and mental expressions for each other. We knew the importance of providing joy, of taking responsibility for developing our most positive sense of self. So I looked at the other vows on the wall and realized two of them vied for my immediate attention, so closely related they could have held hands:
